I think there is something in alcohol dependency rising as pubs close. So the governement can't make the argument that they need to tax alcohol to bring down dependency.
I grew up and still live in the western US (nevada and utah). I'd never been to England until 2023, when I brought my family to spend Jan-July there. The first few months we lived in a village called Ticehurst. The first night we were there the locals brought us to The Bell, one of two local pubs. We soon found The Bull, just a bit up the road. The pub was a revelation. No TV. A fireplace. Average food. Locals sitting around talking. Truly the community living room! We made friends. We made plans with those friends. One night I ended up for some reason wrestling a 70 year old who was strong as an ox.
A good friend of mine who owns a small chain of restaurants in Utah just took a trip to London and asked if I had any recommendations on where he should go. I said go to as many village pubs as possible. Take notes. There's nothing like it here. We need it.
Unreal post - thank you.

I am off the pub x
The first thing your dad did after picking me up from Heathrow was to stop at a pub and introduce me to England. 1977.

God save the King and long live pubs!
